Toronto-based Bad Breed started out as a hard-edged combination of punk rock and 60s R&B. Inspired by the sounds of Stevie Wonder, Curtis Mayfield, Betty Davis and Led Zeppelin, the muscular funk, lightning-sharp guitar riffs and soulful songs of love and despair from their latest album are a testament to the transformative and ferocious power of love.

hear songs from those bands plus their contemporaries. I’m guessing plus their contemporaries plus bands of spotify figured out people that like those bands like here interesting. Okay yeah so it’s way more than that that it is specifically as why when you asked me that it’s kind of hard saved because it’s not like we put on a specific band. Yeah i will probably do that more than kelly will. I will throw on him. Just cake and shuffle cake but then we also throw on cake. Radio interesting okay. What about you well. So i went for a walk after work. I figured this was a setup to get to you. So that’s why it’s not always about sometimes about okay I thought of the question. Because i usually will catch up or listen to a podcast on my walk and today for some reason i said i’d want to listen to people talking. I wanna hear music. And so i thought oh should i play the welcome to the music playlist. Which is songs from our guests I said i wanna listen to that by due to listen to a former guest of ours. Crown lands So what. I want to hear some rock and so yeah so. That’s i just listened to thirty minutes of kremlin’s are now. Are my office so the band. I did listen to today. Was that that. I really delved into dumbed. I i said to kellyanne are welcome disappointed. I didn’t listen to more of it before. Our conversation with danny is he said well then. Maybe that’s danny partout. I thought that’s a perfect idea. Yeah we once in particular maybe maybe once kover can get the band to come and do some songs that radical road. It’s tongue helmet. high following. Podcast is brought to you by radical road brewery. You’re welcome. did meets all right sue. Thanks for doing this. I think this is going to be. This is going to be interesting. This is going to be fun because as greg will attest we’ve We’ve had multiple guests but are multiple cameras so In post greg is going to have five feeds to go through so so this is awesome. Let’s of this way. Let’s start off with them with your latest album ferocious love. I hope i got that right. Is that correct ferocious. Love was the there. You go Were you showing the your arm with the name of the the now i was just i was gonna scott. I’d say right there but by the name of the record on me but just it’s it’s actually here. If you can see through my jacket. Greg can you see this through my job. i can. Character does ferocious so congrats on on on the album. mike tell tell me about You’re one of the seniors but Correctly from wrong year. The the main songwriter. I’m the lyricist yet. So you’re the neal pertz of the band. Yes i’ve played drums on the records and i I did the lyrics. So yeah i am well. Do you want to just want to hear about how we kind of started. This man would have while. I had quit doing music for a number of years. I just sort of decided to myself that that was the end. You know i’ve been you know a few different dance before and there was an earlier version of battery and I had a couple of of rough years and that kind of culminated in You know i was with the same person. I’m just gonna since you is. That was with the same person the age of fifteen till the age of forty five. And you know we met as sort of trial to tweet cards or is school sweethearts and she. She died in twenty seventeen and that was a prolonged period of the two of us dealing with a lot of mental health emotional difficulties in all kinds of different things and that it’s during the last years of her life by you know. I spent a lot of time sitting on the couch beside her. You know You know engulfed in unhappiness and misery not with each other with dealing with our own mental health problems and after that happened. I was starkly aware that i suddenly a single parent of seventeen year. Old daughter and I realized that i didn’t have a choice anymore. I know it’s not like it’d be simple. But i couldn’t simply just sit on the couch anymore. I just hope that life went by quickly. So i went back to the thing that i the one thing that i always felt confident. Doing that was a music. And so i started. I was almost you know. Obviously wasn’t the next day or anything like that. But within months i thought to myself what can i do. That will get me up every day. What can i do with myself. That will get me feeling starting to feel more like a person again. You know whatever whatever a person is you know and so. I started writing some lyrics and i got together with some may. Lynn may linen. I had known each other many many years ago. We were at a band together. We you know we kept in contact. You know willett regularly. But i just i had this concept where i’m gonna do record with You know. I’ll do one song with one person that i’ve made music with before i’ll do another song with somebody else that i’ve done music with i’ll just because that’s all i thought i could handle this sort of like a one on one thing like i thought i could sit with landon do music. I don’t know if i could just sit in a room with a whole bunch especially not like you know five or five died like doing like punk rock or something. I just couldn’t that displeasant where my head was at so yeah it was a slow process of just like hey we talk for a long time. But how would you feel about writing songs with me. And that’s that’s how we started this record and a lot of it was done that way minot song as promised which is the start of the second side of the record if he had the vinyl I wrote that with with catholic catherine who sang on records. She said great vocalist. And catherine wilson. We did that together. And then i. At the same time i was doing everything concurrently and then i flipped over and say so if maitland at this idea for this song called animal impact you know. I had a baseline in mind. May lindsey graham bass player so we started doing that and then oscar who plays guitar on the record. I said i have idea for notice. I’m so anyway one day was just like well. Why don’t we all meet together here. You know it just took time to time for me to just sort of be comfortable. You know getting back into a rhythm getting back into the world getting up every day going out. You know that kind of thing and you said you wanted the long version right great seriously long way around saying yeah so that and that’s basically that’s how it started and we we eventually got eight songs together And during the during that time you know this you know. This is long long periods. This took months and months into a year And i you know. I i met somebody and you know eventually fell in love with someone else later. You know and so that became part of the record as well. Lynn became the you know this is where i was. And this and the combination of ferocious love of another person and music and the love of these people that i had was to get to work with to put this together is is how we got the record and this was when when were you letter writing and recording. This this was pretty cove right it will. Oh yes though the record was i. We finished mixing the last song for the record I wasn’t even able to go into the studio so that was done. It get the very beginning of cova. I think running. That’s why i was wondering in terms of timelines. So yeah yeah so we started. We started writing at the end. The very end of twenty seventeen gone. Back in my. You know my notes like my notes on my phone and golic. Jesus that’s when we started so the first little bit to lyrics were at the end of december or january twenty eight team and Yeah and it was mixed and finished at the very beginning of the pandemic in an officially came out in late summer. Twenty nineteen
Twenty nineteen as awesome By with so you missed music or was it you needed and you believe that this process of writing and recording was self therapy for you. Yes yes and yes no. I didn’t i didn’t miss. I don’t think i missed music. I missed feeling like i was capable of of connecting with other people. You know and my you know not you know again. I started my first band when i was fifteen old but my first proper band played shows. I met My first wife her. Name’s deb in today’s her birthday by the way we all want to just say how birthday today. Today’s i would have been a big birthday for deb. So you know we’re we’re all happy to be together doing this today. So yeah so we met. When i was you know why was fifteen years old we met. She introduced me to punk rock. Like i didn’t. If i hadn’t met her i probably and this isn’t a criticism of living in pickering. But i’d be living in pickering listening to led zeppelin you know and and i i. Don’t you know you get the idea you know. We met at a job that we did. It was like an after school job. You started at six pm on friday and you worked in a newspaper factory putting a financial times together until about four. Am to six am so it’d be there for twelve hours anyway. We met there. And the asking if i’d ever heard of the stooges and i was like nope none of what who are. They know the three stooges soak she. You know she would start bringing records at work. anyway. I got into punk rock band. Thanks to her. I met like there was one punk die in school that betsy walking around with safety pins all over his jean jacket and i felt. Hey i think. I think maybe we like some music the same so we started a band together and so yeah i mean but i guess make sure i. I don’t know if i’m capable of that but to make a long story medium. I you know. I all of my socializing from from that age was done through music or with my girlfriend who became my wife’s type thing i mean i didn’t i wasn’t i didn’t go to bars ing things like that. I just i wasn’t. I didn’t feel comfortable. Hang out with a bunch of guys unless you’re doing something in order. I mean i needed to. I need to be like yeah man. Let’s hang out after school like but let’s work on a song. it was just. I don’t know what it is but it was just something. So i missed that i missed to answer your question I realized that i missed music. After i started writing the songs they absolutely it was again. I don’t know. I would have found something else to force myself back to you. Know waking up out of stupor bud. I’m glad it was. This was music. Yeah i got a question for edward pickering of your your coming. I grew up in whitby all right and so so. I’m not sure not sure when you had like years you had gone to high school but i was wondering we ever voted sort or around the oshawa punk scene like the star club and like that is i mean i got great from hanging out at the star club is. I’m not sure how. What are difference in ages but in the early nineties i played in a band called grasshopper that was like a toronto. Kinda grunge rock and and we would go out and play in oshawa. I remember we played You’ll remember this is a roller rich. That like people play shows at what was that the purple the purple onion. That was the it used to be. I definitely played the provide you dancing question. Yes in pickering had its own weird little seen right. There was literally. there was a pizza place called pinos. that was like a tiny pizzeria. That would let you put on and diy punk rock shows on sundays. You know nobody paid anything we you know so. I’m sure there was some some crossover there. Yeah so late. Eighties early nineties. I was playing in. I was i was mid eighties early nineties. Okay go so right around the same time. I wanna ask a male. Excuse me what asking me. Linda question When when mike came to you was at hey. Do you want to write a song together. You know he’d been out music for a few years was an easy. Yes for you or was it something to think about. Tell me about that. I have to think anything about Miami we worked before in the history of the band. I’m even when we didn’t see the photo very long time. He was kind of friend that you don’t have to see them every day by the connection alive so Well never tell you it’s probably i. We didn’t go sauce for awhile for years like the last time i saw my. It was on myself baby shower seeking modane when my son. He’s almost close so for about for a long time. We didn’t begin he contests with any issue. Anything i i learned about the very possibly on faces when i see someone who puts a comment on And i see on friday. I say something happened to debbie. I don’t know what it is. But so i thought rotea money emails on the answer. Fire way i said. Hey my geno so for a very long time. But i see something on facebook allow daily. I don’t understand what point on whatever it is all on the us when he Debbie away. So i told him. Okay may on christ era if you wanna talk of get together and i remember that. Maybe the next week we’ve got to their the downfall honestly he sold the the I didn’t have to think about it. I said yes immediately league beagles. I knew going to through rough times. And i know what music do when you’re going through time and i know the my be used to cooperate so corinne collaborating musical projects that is the would bring a lot of feeling his life but at the same time i needed something for myself because i was doing In master at a university. And i was like i was almost convincing. Move from using just doing all this so even my my own life was calling for missing so i think it was perfect. Timing that everyone needs is music to heal. And that’s why i didn’t even think about it. I said yes. Let’s do it. I’m very easy. But i will make time for these. Listen to it. that is awesome. See your that your the bass player. I out in the band. I’m curious mail. Do you have any any bass player. Is that that you look up to that. You model yourself after. I
am fun of from new for me for me. I would said that i have Big long as jimi hendrix. That’s a big one for me. But i also like the way he fire on stage and it has to do with my personality. I play debate. But i’m also fire and safe. So yes i look up a lawsuit jimi hendrix. And i was sad and then mr brown act well even though i have to tell you i be u. I used to come in this country We were banned from Us music for a very long time. So i didn’t grow up noling anything about. Us misty out other. When i can’t taleh. And i i looking always sides i was like wow i one more seen. I late beijing you but not draw of foam or anything like that. I don’t have that feeling inside me. That folk music always cold my from because fire for me. A fire is like the same. So yes i would say that Humid those down my the league. One that it’s it’s interesting. Because i mean you know in doing research and listening to music i mean you know it’s described as jazz blew punk funk like there’s so many influences that come through your music is that an mainly. I don’t know if that’s like. Is that something that everybody brings or like. Mike was it more d. did it evolve into this eclectic. I wouldn’t take a coffee but it’s an amazing sound mix. You know what i mean. I love the were eclectic for music. Because that doesn’t put us in one category and i think it is a world that East fair to describe Music and yes. You have to look at least for them. Background information we always different musical story for the people. I was trained In the classical classical senior. So i have a lot of classy believe for me in my head but i also have a lot of you are formation in my head. I’m lucky and africa so we’re nice name by baseline all that comes Gone out then my car these on punk-rock story and right now we either have the piano player which is also classically trained so i would say that the beauty of our work is that we are able to respect everyone story musical story and take advantage of it so that might be the reason. Why when you listen for music hugh you can see. That is like marriage a lot of towns and even we had also channel dr. He’s asia and he loved blues and so i think yes. Although stories say the canal in our that is awesome. I want to go to Caccia for this next question. You are The newest member of the band Tell me tell me about joining. The band was an easy decision for you What were you doing prior to of guessing. Mike giving you well. It isn’t mike. I gave me a call. Actually i i know mike eventually. Yes but who put me in contact with the band. And i got to know mike. I’m very happy for that By the way it is my land because my leyland i we studied we did our masters degree together and we were. Elaborately collaborated On a musical project i had. That was more jazz And i was linked also to cuba and other projects and I was going through a kind of life change. I am from montreal. And i moved to toronto permanently dam. And that’s like that’s how. I was able to reconnect myself with. Music was through Myleene that we reconnected at a certain point and and then should invite me to go see some bad breed shows so this is like in pre covid times and you know i wouldn’t go there and take photos and just like and i. I really liked their music. I love the energy on on stage. and then what happened is that i received
a record player from montreal. And then marlins like oh. We have a vinyl. And but i have a vinyl but i can’t really play it. I don’t have a record player. So i’m like come on and let’s play it you know and i was like while because i heard the music on stage but i didn’t listen to the whole album and i found it was a really great and I hooked up onto that and Well things happen that they needed a singer and mike. I think you listen to one of miami songs of video. And then like he thought about like saying. Hey do you wanna come in sing with us. And i’m like e f some very happy
about that and Of course i’m. I’m not in the like the rock punk aspect but you know i. I listened to rock punk and grunge when i was in my teens. And you know like all gen xers did anyways and but But then i turn to jazz so jazz like blues but i like everything Fundamentally so but yes what what. I bring to the band and now that we’re like more rehearsing for For future live shows or or what we’re doing here with you is more the jazzy type of tones. You know the jazz chill-out thanks so it’s interesting. We talk about joining the band now preparing for. Hopefully we’re all gonna get a shot in get the hang out together and play live beyond each other Mike i think i think i i heard interview or read Talking about like. I think it was almost a year ago to the day. Was the last show that you did when everybody thought like. I mean you know my wife’s a teacher we thought we were never march break and schick real real fast and so can you talk a bit about that. And sort of our last show was march. Jade’s twenty twenty international women’s day we had We played at the linz more tavern and it was a great show. Like i felt like we were on this role. We played these this series of shows and we got to that one. I was like mad. I feel like i felt like i. You know i felt you know being close to people’s holding. I mean literally pitcher about that show is reaching out holding people’s hands and sing like right in their face. You know and you know that that seems like a distant memory at this point but you know you guys all remember holding hands right so you know it was that man. This is great like bring like we had a series of shows that were set up and then they fell like dominoes so goddamn For not just because we can’t play shows and thinks differently but yeah You know. I remember thinking. Wow that sounds like. I was actually in in. I was in new zealand for december of two thousand nineteen for that month because my my current wife’s lives in new zealand and got married in december twenty nineteen and in new zealand. And i remember you know we’d just listen. To the radio dangle man. That sounds hard. Like whatever’s happening in china. That virus doesn’t sound good. You know and turns out it was for everybody you know when he came home and did a couple of shows so yeah i mean you miss it like i said i disappeared from it. I came back. I was ready. Everybody and then you know just like everybody else came along and said you’re not ready right this second so we will be. It’s cool you know what i mean. It’s cool in the sense that when we do get together like kathy was saying we have an maitland mentioned. We’ve got a new piano player. His name is denzel and he’s bring a whole. he’s the class up keenest. He loved chopin. he put a host yesterday on instagram. Asking everybody with their favorite show panties floods and i answered by skipping over it. Because i don’t know. I don’t have all my With so he’s a young man he’s stone teams and a dedicated amazement. player has got this jazzy voice. You know Denzel beautiful piano player. So we’re just like okay. How do we what do we do. Now let’s yeah as you said like one day will hopefully get a shot at something and at some point we’ll play again and it’s going to be great So yeah but yes who knew on that fateful day on march the eighth whereas we’re just like you know yeah i remember i remember it well. It’s a great show that was. It was my favorite of the ones that we had done as dispersion of the band so we we ended on i. It’s interesting because it could have been that weekend. And i was just just a block over at rocket grabbing a coffee. Widens what happened is. I don’t know i should’ve been there. I should have been. Why didn’t you walk by the or on the side that said bad greed might talk angola by it. I walked by it every weekend. Couple of a couple times a week. So yeah but i do. I i remember. I remember reading the the toronto star as i’m as the people just sort of sitting there while i was waiting for my coffee and i remember that one of the one of the ver- august one of the doctors. One of the people way smarter than i can speak obviously has the gretzky of viruses. It’s the most lethal and it’s not the most contagious but it’s the one sitting behind the net getting ready so it would have been. I’m sure it would have been that weekend. Martinez if i think about it i read the same thing. It said that it mentioned that the virus has a side part. Is that correct all right. Yeah we both read the any. I i remember so we were. We played that show. Of course there are next shows dot canceled. I remember my. My wife was whose name is manda manda. She was supposed to be here for the month of april. And i remember getting very tearful phone call like a couple of days after that show just saying they’ve canceled flights like i can’t come and i was like that’s okay like in a workout. Like maybe maybe you can come and we’re still waiting right so yeah we’re still waiting. You know we got got married and had a great time and so yes. We are currently at months. Fourteen or fifteen. So we’ll get as we’ll get there is. I assumed ice when you’re telling that did that. She was here so no no no i. It’s pitchy just texted. I could see texts. Pop up during the zinc. All that said. I’m going for coastal walk. Sweetheart have a great interview. So he’s on the coast in wellington new zealand having a walk in the sun because it is summer there. It end that we’re having your own little bit of sunshine with you guys. Wow i’m so glad to hear that The more tavern is still open. My dad used to have a drycleaners. Across from the greenwood subway station for many years. When i was when i was a kid. I’d go in on a on a saturday afternoon with Probably four bucks And be able buy a burger fries and a coke and watch a maple leaf wrestling. Wwe wrestling right on a saturday afternoon. Sounds like quite a saturday. Oh i loved it. Dad less money every time i came in and helped helping him out. That’s great yeah. I mean i i don’t know i it’s still open now like i hope they like. I hope they folks through. I don’t let’s hope. I i don’t know i haven’t knock on wood so far when i walk by. There’s been no sign of saying anything. Other matt all right to ask you this question mike we we have a. We have a theme in in and they should have told you this before but by a low catch you off guard and get some fresh fresh
thoughts from you on this one We have something that we like to call lost venues Where we talk to our guest about a a favourite venue That they’ve that they’ve played in a whether it’s one time maybe it was the first time playing and some curious if there is a a favorite place that you used to play or that you have played. That isn’t around anymore. So they’re lost venue. So i’m curious if there’s if there’s one of those there are lots right because i mean you know you play long enough and they start to disappear. There was a place called the niagara cafe. I don’t know if you guys remember that. If that rings any bells it wasn’t a big place it was at cleaning niagara. That was so with my very first like punk rock bands as a teenager. That was our first big like downtown show and it was the it happens to be the same night that Courtney that courtney love and all that whole played. They played the rivoli. And i loved them at the time. And my girlfriend at the time. I guess i’m gonna come to you guys but you don’t have to. I mean like. I want to be at the rivoli seton hall as well anyways. So niagara cafe was know because again we talked about. I was from pickering so came down. I was the drummer. I was singing drummer for that band and the venue had a riser for the drivers was the name of the band. Mike starting trump. It was called goat. Danseuse a horrible name goat. Alright so go down a story. You need the cassette just me. Now drop it off at your place. That was a three piece punk. Rock bands heavily influenced by cousquer. Do and sonic. Youth’s died a whole bunch punk rock stuff in new age stuff so we were all terrified because it was downtown. I don’t know. I’m very very shy at the time when i was very nervous. And there was a riser i remember. It was carpeted and it felt soft. You know like when we walked up a like this is wet or whatever anyways after about four songs the the alderwood was i. Guess just rotten and it just fell out from under me and my entire drum kit. Just folded over. And all the microphones just broken. I was just like humiliated. You know somewhere in the middle of playing and then everything no disappeared out from under me. And i i remember i was just sitting on my laying on my back fell off my stool and i was like staring at stealing going like. I can’t believe that like i’m not watching whole like that. I’m laying on right. You would any so know. It was very avenue. I i will say on a site note. I don’t know what the so i’ve played again. I was playing in a band called grasshopper. we were playing Da guy ever gone to detroit to see shows like i used to detroit quite a lot now. Yes you’ve been greg abbott. You great not to drive very didn’t he told you he did but he did. I went to. We’re playing in detroit at a place called saint andrews hall. We were opening for bigger band. You know our biggest show that we never play like there were a thousand people there for me that whatever it’s still that’s a lot of people and my meter flew off in the first song and there was no bass drum so we were playing. You know so. It was just all nope low low end and the drummer from the band. Bureau for ran up I got it twisted it back in. We’re good and then it flew off again. I couldn’t pick him out. I could make eye contact with them. So there was no base from for the next twenty two minutes and yeah so sometimes things. Don’t go the way that you that you hope that they would bury starts so there. Yeah it’s funny mentioned saint andrews hall. I think if. I’m not mistaken i it’s still there. Yes so i think. The reason cream was thinking of that was off for our anniversary from my wife’s and my anniversary in the seventeenth last year. We were supposed to be there to see. I believe silver sun pickups and that got cancelled and so maybe that’s why i was thinking i’ve been destroyed is he probably one of that show haram. You’ve got a great memory somewhere in your member. His anniversaries as my social convenor. I mean he organizes everything for giving organized for my wife and then just tells me in that way suite the marriott’s or that or oh it was. It was the best. I lost cash on the damn. Yeah cova yes so nice big you in good size venue in detroit so neither cafe is the one in toronto that i have because i mean what i mean you know. That’s a vivid memory like how often you know. Lose your whole kit while you’re playing. So yeah that would be what happens. So it falls through the riser. Yeah you fall down you just you just pick it back up and start playing again no because you know because we were like one of four punk rock bands and the discussion came up with guy. Started picking stuff up in pushing the other two that is to the side of the stage so and the other bands came up by the time. You’ve finished setting these drums up in remaking it. It’s going to be time for our great goodnight. Everybody like thanks. Like you know what i mean. So yeah no so. That was the end of the show. I don’t know if you’ve played shows you know three or four songs. Excuse me but now that was the end. Yeah is there anybody from dote dance. That’s still around in terms of their still doing music. They’re still guess in bands or produce again hundred percent. There’s jim who is the guy. The said punk rocker with the sake depends up and down as jean jacket. He and i have another group that i play drums income beast music so we he also came back into my life at this time when i was reaching out to be by reached out to him. I said let’s do a song that turned into its own projects. You know with an commit out quickly. Tell you this because it’s fascinating gonna love it. He’s an english teacher out in port. Perry and he mentioned that we were jamming. You know again. We i and yet we you know and so and he stopped kinda stopped doing music for you know. Well i was still doing stuff and you know that kind of thing so we got back together with each other terrific and he said you know one of my old students is like a a great poet and she moved to the city in anyways ci became our singer so we have like the high school teacher the student and then you know myself and a couple of our bent so yeah so yes. The answer is yes. One of them is absolutely still doing music. And he’s doing it with me although we have not seen each other officially since march of twenty nineteen at twenty twenty. Excuse me so yeah. That’s that is nuts. may mail in back back to you Catches said that you invited her to To come in be be a singer in the band Wanna singers in this ban. Why why was it Was it necessary to To recruit some more some more singers while attache
because in we have custody. Thinking is comforting a mike on my so sometimes being some phones flow but they move on to other projects the whole life. I could have tap off on dude seeking. I’m playing the bay. But i was paul busy. I’m so busy. I’m doing my phd. Now i do my my phd. And i’d say for my mind is gonna be faster. It would get a new scene digesting down me because you know singing doing live focus. Something bake it requires a lot of the nation. So i took my eyes because i thought also that we would played shows life. I think like everyone else. I saw that no discovered situation is just gonna be one long back on stage so i said to my needs to lead ready for chose and that’s why we need to get all the listening believe is happier because is very He’s a very is a bridge as well. I don’t know if you noticed in the album. Them we all be in the so the gokhale harmony. They’re very interested in that. So yes i think. Three singers is is what may in imbibed. So that’s why. I said i go copy. I said top yuppie joining and also. I like the fact that We like to give the three things. We three different styles because he was bertha versatility. So i come from the jazz world. My the rock and i am something. What are you doing your masters in by the way. Your doctor doctorates okay. I need my monster. He casali can. I’m doing my doctor. He will follow my doctors my research. I am researching the community of musicians in toronto. So i’m trying to saturdays at connection between he more easily yes on the development of professional development of few nothing around i was trying to find. I picked up a a record the other day From a cuban band or duo They were actually guests of ours sometime in the past year. Was it kinda okay. Oh come on lead awesome. They will go. I’m there buried on the damn. I really good yes. I said a great a great conversation with it was so lovely to speak to them. Yeah for sure. I’m guessing belief. I don’t remember the name of your plays violin and seeing at the same time and the other ones said if a question that is awesome. Caccia you you come from a jazz background. Tell me about getting started inch. Were you always in in jazz music. We always singing jazz or did you was your bring your your your your history music. More diverse Well like i started singing. More taking jazz vocal jazz. Casa’s before i had like of course i. I used to sing other stuff. I have listened to a lot of different musical styles. So it’s not that like. I was born in jazz and then i decided to sing jazz. So jazz came at the beginning of the twenty first century and Yeah so i. I took some jazz classes. I was in jazz. Combos in montreal. And eventually i did an album where i combine jazz with other things influences to modernize them face. Yep and then now well That’s it so i’m bringing like this experience To the band the joint well while doing a phd has well like my. Are you studying the same thing as her. And i’m i’m specializing in cuban literature. Oh so we’re we’re kind of the cuban thing that’s fascinating that’s fascinating so one of the questions that we like to ask our guests. I want to throw it around. The horn is what’s in your earbuds lately. What are each of you listening to me. We can start with the. Do you wanna start. Just what are you listening to lately. It might sound felt clean lately. Listen to music. Because i’m listening. Lots about the the because We always lean basing also and they find me. We have been doing a lot of Accuracy version to stay alive because we’ve been playing streaming show so lately I in a lot swallow music komo life. For example we h- we are going to apply for the media music week and we have to three birsh on naughty my life which is usually a five and a half minutes so i very sample i i i i had to listen to the music pattern just to come up with a sixty five version of the song so yes is myself selfish but lately i listened the most is so our music improve on to make friends versions of on phones to stay alive Defended dressed a different arrangements. You yourself me. Well because i’ve re I’ve recovered my vinyl collection Of course. Of course i’m listening to bad breed because you know i’m i’m kind have to learn the songs and bring my own vocabulary to it. So that’s it but that’s that aspect
i’m doing But yeah i’m it’s funny to say but i’m i’m listening to rolling stones and i. I wish i received like these records. Lick rolling stone wreckers. i’m gonna listen to some bowie. i’ll listen to joni mitchell. Which is for me. My model my source of inspiration when i want to writes songs Let’s say panting. Yeah maybe her anyways. I i listened to very music but it’s because i’m like coming back to my my vinyl records collections. So i like to listen to a bit of everything and of course you know stream and check out what’s happening also on the rest of the planet exploring new music through the streaming which is interesting because we actually on our pre show. Were discussing spotify band radio in different streams to be exploring music. Yeah there’s some online radials that. I’m exploring the music and you’re discovering all these bands so yeah so it’s good also i think to to check out what other people also are doing and but it’s also good to go back in time and listen listened to the classics or things that you really enjoyed when you were really younger. And then you say okay. Maybe that’s how. I got a certain vocabulary or certain influence. And then there’s the project right now so the idea is to blend everything nice and mike yourself well On my record player right now is santana. I love santana listened to that. I just moved into a new place. I started i records. And i set up my little tiny weight set because i don’t know if the heard the gyms are closed so Yeah i listen to santana lifted weights last night and it was terrific. And the miles davis. john coltrane I drive a lot. Let’s for work. i do. I drive rideshare right now. And so i listened to community. Radio in toronto loves ut fm guys check that out there and it’s the u. T. station so there are shows on that that are you know some nights. Are you know some shows are all funk in seoul in some shows are all blues rock. So i listen to the radio constantly and then you know i will hear something from there that i just like. Why have i never ever heard that before. Then it what everybody else does find it. On streaming in I’ve been listening to a lot of a lotta jazz recently. like instrumental stops Miles davis john coltrane. That kind stuff you know just to end just to go back like you guys were talking earlier about the idea of having collected sound and and things like that i just. I think that just listening to what everybody’s listening to. It’s interesting that for me like to try to create something sound wise that we’re doing sonically. What we’re trying to do is finding those things that played in the past and sort of like all guy you know. Punk rock loud We we all kind of dress the same. Well i definitely know those guys are listening to you know whatever it is the mc five or whatever else you know it’s cool right like it’s cool like you kind of come in like every gang. You’re you’re doing that thing. Like i’ve been in bands like that but what i like about this. Is that one of the things that i love about doing this with. All these guys and is going like so. Okay kathy where you come from okay. Cool you from jazz. Like i mean you know whereas whereas where’s that the whatever it is that i that i want to hear in in in what we’re doing. ’cause there’s there’s hard stuff like i mean in james brown. I mean you know that. Obviously if you’ve listened. Eric intrigue is to. That’s hard but that’s hard music hard driving bang bang bang bang bang rights whereas it in you know in hip-hop where is it in jazz where is it in reggae like. That’s i’ve been listening to a bunch of like the scooped. Congo that to me like. That’s i mean it doesn’t hard doesn’t pass be volume right. It doesn’t have to be like distortion it. Doesn’t you know. I’m probably stating the obvious for everybody. But i think i find that where where is the Power in the sense of emotional power in the quiet moments in what we do right and so we’re told them we’re scaling things back on your mice with a piano in three voices in base. How’s it. how do we still do things that that like the room like me up right because that’s most important for me. It’s it’s. it’s the most important to be thrilled right. Because if i’m not thrilled then somebody sitting if you’re watching me. You’re not going to be thrilled chances on. I mean unless you’re also gaming the same time which is possible guys. But you know people multitask these days. Right so yeah. I know you didn’t ask that question. But i just want great. It’s interesting to hear what these guys are listening to Denzel’s over there denzel. What are you listening. I’m listening to you. Can you hear chamber here. Yeah this on gonna bring his head into the into china guy. Do more post greg pay. I listen. I’m listening to a law of concertos recently Modern off of chopin’s insured. Oh number one into very guy. He being on camera listening to a lot of classical romantic music. Because that’s just the type of music. I love to listen to three. Thank you for coming up. This is what i’m saying right. Like i don’t i. It doesn’t matter whether or not. I listened to that joni mitchell which i don’t but let you know what i mean like. It doesn’t matter because what where what is the magic that everybody else gets from all those things. I what we’re doing. We’re trying to make magic guys. Nice contagious through. Dagger is at you and you said that piece about joining
mitchell. So be careful of this story out there. But that’s the beauty. I don’t ’cause that’s you know what i’m saying because you with a lot of rock bands. It’s like especially when you’re younger. It’s what if there’s like a cachet in the kind of music that you listen to well. That’s not cool if you you know. They threw out the original bass player from the sexless because he listened to the beatles. I mean that’s a great reason. Throw somebody out of the band. But i wouldn’t you know what i mean. Yeah yeah no no. It’s not you know what i mean like. There’s a lot of that that matter to me. I guess it probably did certain point You know. However i was i was i was thinking about because like you. Mentioned. mc five. And i thought about all my buds and we all converged on the danforth ram fifty a couple of years ago and it was said that i chuckled. Because it’s like there’s all of us old guys listen to punk rock back in the day that hanging out listening to some great tunes and that’s amazing right like but that’s but no longer for me. Is it important like i. It doesn’t matter to me what denzel listens to. I mean as long as it’s he’s happy and he can bring a feeling with him to what we do right for me. It’s all just about what are we. What are we doing. Oh you that’s cool melted. Brachman enough had two parts of his concerts. He saying oh. I got a note. I’m matters none of it matters as long as we’re as long as you get there were you know we’re making some making starting with me and us we feel something. Hopefully somebody else will. This has been a fascinating and a fun conversation. I want to thank all of you. Caught the mailing and mike denzel for making a surprise appearance.
