At the beginning of this year I wrote a piece for itbusiness.ca titled, 5 Canadians to watch in digital technology in 2016.

2015 was a very eventful year in Canada. We saw Justin Trudeau’s Liberals topple the Harper Conservatives decade long grip on power in this country. When it came to technology, we continued to see Uber battle local governments and the established taxi industry; marketers giggled with excitement as Facebook opened up the ability for all businesses to advertise on Instagram; Periscope made Twitter cool again (but for how long?); Netflix continued to grow; and Taylor Swift shamed Apple Music into paying artists a fair wage.

What will 2016 bring to the table here in Canada? Who will the movers and shakers be in technology here? Time will tell, however, here are five Canadians worthy of your attention in 2016.

What makes a successful app developer? This is a question that many hundreds (if not thousands) of Canadians are asking themselves. Why? The barrier to create these apps has never been lower and the industry is becoming flooded with talent. In downtown Toronto, one is but a stone’s throw away from successful app development shops.

It has been a pleasure getting to know Robleh over the past couple of years.  Most recently, I have had the opportunity to sit at the feet of this humble giant to learn how he has launched 3 consecutive successful mobile products.

Who is Robleh Jama? He is the founder & CEO of Tiny Hearts which is an award-winning software studio focused on creating beautiful, playful and useful apps.

What has he built?

  1. Pocket Zoo – a virtual zoo with live animal cams. Pocket Zoo went on to become a #1 Education app and a Top 50 Overall app.
  2. InstaMatch – The Instagram Game.  A popular memory game that has been featured on TechCrunch, TUAW, Swiss Miss, Coolhunting.com and by Apple as a What’s Hot & Staff Favourite app.
  3. Most recently released Wake, a beautiful and intuitive alarm for iPhone. Currently a top utility app on the App Store.
