Sammy Younan

After our summer vacation Gregg Tilston and I got back in studio for a chat with Girth Radio founder Sammy Younan.

We discussed the rise and fall (but not dead!) of Girth Radio’s longtime home at the Pacific Junction Hotel, what’s coming up at the Toronto International Film Festival, movie spoilers, and the all too important topic of urinal etiquette.

Thanks to CF Toronto Eaton Centre for hosting us in their pop-up studio!

This is Episode #187 of the Welcome! podcast.

Tom Wilson

When my next guest walked on stage the crowd at The Great Hall in Toronto popped. A giant of a man with long, dark, wavy hair and wearing a dark, long coat came on stage and read from his book. This was March 29, 2018.

I had no clue who this person was. Why did he read from a book?

My next guest was raised in Hamilton, ON. He is an award-winning musician, singer, songwriter, an author, painter and visual artist.

The liner notes in his book, “Beautiful Scars”, reads, “Along the way he became a father and a grandfather, battled demons and addiction, and he waited, hoping for the truth to emerge. and when it did, it would sweep across the St. Lawrence River to the Mohawk reserve of Kahnawake in Quebec , on to the heights of the Manhattan skyline.” I now understood why he read from his book.

Please Welcome to the show, Tom Wilson.

Song: Out Of My Head, Junkhouse

Patricia O’Callaghan

Vivascene has called my next guest “one of the best singers ever to come out of Canada.” The National Post said, “This Toronto soprano can sing a 100-year old German tune so lustily that you almost don’t need a translation to know that someone’s about to get his throat cut, or get laid, or both.”

My next guest is an award-winning classical singer who grew up in Northern Ontario wanting to be a rockstar. Or a nun.

Please Welcome to the show, Patricia O’Callaghan!

Documentaries are stories – hopefully important stories. Documentary films are some of the most popular films on networks such as Netflix and Canada’s CBC.

In late April, in Toronto, the world of documentary films comes together as part of the Hot Docs Festival.

My next guest is showcasing one of these important stories: The Daughter Tree. It is a film that explores the aftermath of a cultural preference for baby boys in the interior of India. The film is seen through the eyes of two people: of a midwife who advocates for baby girls as well as a man who lives in the Village of Men where a girl as not been born in over 20 years.

Please welcome to the show: writer, producer, and director Rama Rau.
